Gossamer Webs: The History and Techniques of Orenburg Lace Shawls by Galina Khmeleva and Carol Nobl. Khmeleva, who teaches Orenburg lace-knitting workshops in the United States, here chronicles the history of the fine gossamer shawls produced by knitters in the steppes of the southern Ural mountain range. The books primary focus is on shawl design, planning, and knitting, as the authors lead the reader through a sample miniature shawl. A charted stitch and border dictionary and instructions for a full-sized Eastern Star gossamer shawl are provided for those who wish to create one. Interviews with shawl knitters and the details of a shawl-buying party the authors attended at the home of a Muslim Tatar family in Orenburg make particularly fascinating reading. The only book that gives the history and most of the basic patterns for the Russian Shawls. $20

Knitted Lace Designs Book #1 and #2 by Naoko Ichida and her mother, Kazuko Ichida. They contain many Niebling Designs. Not for the faint-of-heart, but the wonderful translation of symbols by Mary Frances Wogec of Lacis are a tremendous help. The charts take some working through. They have a little trick of marking some stitches that then move on the chart. I find that if I redo on my semi-circle chart, it is easier for my old brain to follow. I will include the beginning of one of the more difficult charts in each book on my semi-circle chart as an example. And, a few pages of the empty chart so you can rechart yourself. As far as these empty charts are concerned, they are free to copy and use as you like. Book #1 by Kazuko Ichida, previously unpublished, $67. Book #2 by Naoko Ichida, available again, $42.

Three
Times A Lady Shawl Pattern by Sandy Terp
This shawl is named "Three Times a Lady" after the Lionel
Richie song and the symbolism represents the three phases of a woman's
life. The construction is the
three-triangle method I have developed. The basic shape is a triangle that
has an unfinished bottom point. From a practical point of view, this
eliminates the awkward long point. Symbolically it shows unfinished or
unrealized parts of a woman’s life. Spiral Bound, 20 pages, 2007 $20

The
Great Cosmos Shawl Pattern by Sandy Terp
My design is called "Cosmos" because the Italian doily design I adapted for the center reminded me of the milky way. This pattern is constructed from the center out. It is done in "Shawl Yarn" which is a 2/32 wool/silk in a natural color. That, and the thicker yarn (needle size 5), yields a 50" shawl that starts with a "larger than circular" center, then squares out and finally has rounded corners. When folded it makes a butterfly shape that sits beautifully on your shoulders. You will like this and you will learn a new and wonderful shawl construction. Spiral Bound, 11 pages, 2003 $20 |

The lace patterns are very basic - - classic ones really, and easy to do. I've provided the original directions as well as my re-written directions and charts. Spiral Bound, 29 pages, 1990 $10 |

Flower Eyelet Afghan by Eugen Beugler, a simple flower eyelet pattern is combined with traditional basket weave for this attractive afghan. Fuchsia Lace Scarves by Eugen K. Beugler, little lace flowers are bordered by gentle scallops on these elegant scarves. Choose between Trailing Fuchsia Lace and Double Fuchsia Lace. On both, the simple lace is outlined with purl stitches. The side edges are knit in Eugen's favorite twisted garter stitch with a cable twist every 10 rows to form the scallop. Scarves shown in dk weight yarn, but the patterns easily adapt to different weights of yarn, as well as for wider scarves and wraps. The versatility and beauty of these designs ensure they will be a perennial favorite. Only $6.00 each. Shipping on patterns is only $2 regardless of the quantity.

Spring Blossoms Shawl by Eugen Beugler, blossoms are bountiful on this beautiful shawl. Purl stitches out-line the leaves and define the stems, creating an interesting texture in the stockinette stitch lace pattern. Knit from the center out, the shawl is cast off with a simple crocheted chain edging that can be started near the end of any 16-round repeat, making it easy to customize the size. The sample was knit in JaggerSpun's Zephyr Wool-Silk. Designed for the adventurous knitter, this heirloom quality shawl will bring a bouquet of compliments through many seasons. Only $6.00 each. Shipping on patterns is only $2 regardless of the quantity.
