MOONTIDE Knitting Retreat 2010

June 6th - 13th at Surfside in Wellfleet, Cape Cod

This Retreat is FULL except for students staying Off-Site.  E-mail if you are interested.

Join us for a fabulous week spent with fellow knitters in beautiful, serene Wellfleet, Cape Cod. Focus on your knitting and enjoy a lovely beach vacation at the same time. Classroom time is mixed with free time for vacation activities and show/share/knit in the evenings. Non-knitting companions and men are welcome. We stay right by the ocean, in a group of cottages which back up to the National Seashore, the same ones we've been enjoying for years.  Registration closes on January 31st, make your reservation early!

Our topic for 2010 will focus on an original design inspired by Wellfleet with unusual shaping and techniques.  You'll advance both your technical skills and your ability to translate your creativity into a knittable piece.

CABINS We rent cabins in Surfside Cottages www.surfsidevacation.com (not roughing it, these are comfortable small houses). We share housekeeping, food shopping, and cooking with cabin mates.  All cabins have one bath, a fully equipped kitchen, heat, clock radios, telephone, and blankets. You will need to bring: sheets and towels, food (stores are expensive in the village and the nearest supermarket is ½ hour away), perhaps a small fan, lawn chair or bike if desired. Cabins have 2 bedrooms with queen beds and one with two twin beds. Please let me know what you would like and if you have cabin mates or roommates picked out. All indoor spaces in Wellfleet are non-smoking by law.

THE TOWN Wellfleet has it all when it comes to water—ocean (Surfside is right on the ocean), kettle ponds and the bay. The National Seashore Park takes up 1/3 of the town and is free from development. Sand roads throughout offer endless nature walks. The paved bike trail winds through on the old railroad bed. The village itself is known as a gallery town. There is a marvelous flea market on Sat & Sun and several antique stores. Provincetown is 20 minutes away for serious arty shopping and other cultural activities including whale watching.

COPYRIGHT I do not copyright any of my handouts—I WANT you to share. But not everyone feels as I do. If you are protective of your ideas and patterns it is not fair to discuss them and then expect fellow knitters to remember not to pass them on.

GETTING THERE Wellfleet is 2.5 hours from Boston airport and about the same from Providence RI. Figure about 1 hour after you cross the canal.  Arrival time is Sun in the afternoon. Classes are full days Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and mini-classes on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday morning.  Departure is Sun in the morning.

COST Classes (approximately 30 hours) are $375 and the lodging for a single occupancy room is $350. The lodging for a shared twin bedroom or a shared queen bedroom is $275 each.  I will do my best to place you as you instruct on a first-come-first-served basis.  If you wish to stay elsewhere there is a $50 classroom fee.

RESERVATIONS To reserve your spot e-mail me (MOONRISELaceKnitting@verizon.net) with the following information and follow with a deposit of $ (snail mail or I can send you a paypal invoice).  Please make a copy for your information. A letter will go out confirming your registration and with more detailed information.

I need to know:  Name, Address, E-mail, Phone number, Queen or Twin Room?, Alone or Share?, If sharing, the name of your roommate if you already have one who is also reserving or if you would like me to find you one, and finally, any special considerations or requests.

E-mail questions or concerns. If you do not get a response it means my computer is giving me trouble. Call 215-822-7292.

Estonian Lace

February 27th & 28th 2010 at MOONRISE in Hatfield, PA

Sorry - this workshop is FULL.  E-mail to be put on the waiting list or express interest in us booking another.

A weekend of fun & learning - - good knitting, good food and good friends! Our main reference source will be a marvelous book, "Knitted Lace of Estonia", by Nancy Bush. It is full of unusual stitch patterns and "must make" shawls and scarfs.  The book alone is available on our books page ($22).

Estonian Garden by Evelyn Clark and Estonian Medallion Lace Scarf by Eugen K. Beugler are also both excellent companions to the exploration of Estonian Lace Knitting.  They are available on our books page in the patterns section.

Estonian Lace will be held over the weekend at my home and business in Hatfield, PA - conveniently located 30 minutes north of Philadelphia (cats in residence).  There are lots of area hotels in which to stay, ask for some recommendations when you register.  The class room is comfortable and beautifully furnished, the setting is peaceful, rural Pennsylvania.  There are plenty of area activities for a significant other to enjoy while you are in class.

The cost is $90.  Yarn for class work is included. The book is not included in this price, and is recommended, but not required for class work. You will have the opportunity to start a project and may want to have the book and yarn for that. Also included: morning and afternoon snacks and wonderful gourmet lunches done by Ebby.

To register send an E-mail with any questions you may have, followed by a $25 non-refundable deposit. MOONRISELaceKnitting@verizon.net  Right now the first weekend is sold out and spaces are only available the second weekend, but often students are willing to switch between, so e-mail if you can only make the first and I'll see what can be done.

In Out Circle Square Shawl

March 13th & 14th 2010 at MOONRISE in Hatfield, PA

A weekend of fun & learning - - good knitting, good food and good friends! This is a design class. Minimum knitting—just a bunch of swatches as the student works on ideas for a theme. Three or more patterns will be chosen and plugged into the construction. Basically, the shawl starts in the middle with a more-than-circular doily or other round design. When it is 1/3 of the way out, the work is squared out by putting the increases in the corners. The last 1/3 of the piece is done with a border pattern on the sides and a portion of the original circle in the corners. A knit-on edging finishes the shawl. The numbers work for any yarn or gauge. This is for the lace knitter who wants to do some designing on her own, but wants the security of a tried and true set of guidelines.

Yarn for the in-class knitting is provided.  Students are encouraged to bring yarn to start their own project while they are at the workshop.

April 24th & 25th 2010 at MOONRISE in Hatfield, PA

A weekend of fun & learning - - good knitting, good food and good friends! The intricacies of working with the finest yarns will be covered and courage will be provided. On day one we will knit a lace bookmark as we learn the formation of lace stitches and cover basic charting concepts.  On day two we will knit a lace baby hat. It starts with a medallion back and then has an edging knit on. My own charting techniques, both round and Lace Shorthand will be used.
